Short Abstract: “To develop a common deflection and twist measuring method applicable for both ground and flight tests, the left wing of a Global 7500 business jet was instrumented with fiber Bragg gratings and underwent durability and damage tolerance certification testing. This fiber optical sensing system [Sensuron] allows distributed strain measurements on the wing. Fatigue and static tests were monitored. … This study shows the potential of using fiber Bragg grating [Sensuron] as a shared ground and flight tests strain measuring method allowing to calculate the aircraft wing deflection and to determine the wing twist angle using a neural network.”
From the paper: “A Sensuron RTS125+ optical frequency domain reflectometry system was used to acquire the FBGs data…. Sensuron machine and Bombardier Aviation’s data acquisition system timestamps were synchronized using the signal received on the Bombardier Aviation Global Positioning System antenna.”
2. Residual Stress Measurement of Additively Repaired Ti-6Al-4V Using Fibre Optic Sensing, Materials Research Proceedings, Vol. 18, 2021
Short Abstract: “Laser metal deposition is a laser-based additive manufacturing technology that offers significant advantages in the production and repair of bespoke and valuable parts targeting applications in the aerospace, tooling and medical industries. A significant problem with AM is the development of high residual stresses, deformation and cracking. Advanced sensing technologies can be a useful tool for characterizing residual stress and the structural response of aerospace components under fatigue loading conditions. This paper reports on a feasibility study assessing the performance of fiber optic distributed strain measurement technology [Sensuron] to measure surface residual stress in comparison to traditional strain gauges and the contour method.”
From the paper: “The coupons were instrumented with a 3 m sensing length of commercially supplied all grating fibre (FBGS) that was interrogated using an OFDR based measurement system (Sensuron Summit).”
3. Fiber-Optics-Based Aeroelastic Shape Sensing, AIAA JOURNAL, December 2019
Short Abstract: “This paper presents a numerical and experimental wind tunnel study of aeroelastic shape sensing using fiber-optic sensors. Strain measurements via both discrete and distributed [Sensuron RTS125+] dynamic fiber-optic sensing technologies were used to estimate a wing’s deformed shape and modal displacements using a strain-to-displacement transformation algorithm. The performance of the fiber-optic sensors and the algorithm were tested in a set of validation tests, in which the displacement response to static loads and to initial conditions was recovered and compared with that from a reference motion tracking cameras system. Excellent match of the responses validated the capabilities of the sensing configuration [Sensuron]. The wing was tested in the wind tunnel in static conditions as well as in dynamic conditions close to and at flutter.”

Short Abstract: “… [researchers] have collaborated on a laboratory mock-up to evaluate performances and limits of innovative shape sensing systems. The final goal is to identify and qualify a tunnel convergence monitoring system, able to provide the evolution of the structure shape over decades, despite very limited access. We first focused on horizontal cased micro-tunnels, with metallic liner, meant for high-level waste repository. ….. We tested innovative solutions which do not restrict disposal volume and enables circulation into tunnels. First, we implemented a quite recent optical shape sensing systems, based on Fiber Bragg gratings from Sensuron, next to standard Fiber Bragg gratings extensometers with a home-made reconstruction algorithm.”
